Monkey Puzzle - Year 2

Hello and Welcome to Monkey Puzzle Class

Mrs Livingston Payne is our teacher

Our Curriculum

Below is a link to our curriculum map which shows the great range of topics we study across the year group including The Titanic and The Great Fire of London.  We look at key figures such as Katherine Johnson, Isatou Ceesay, Samuel Pepys and Florence Nightingale and how their lives and actions affect us still today and inform us about the past.

We enjoy learning in a creative way and try to incorporate drama across the curriculum.

In English we use a range of different genres and text styles to stimulate and generate our own writing such as the Snail and the Whale, The Big Book of the Blue, Counting on Katherine, One Plastic bag, Tidy and The Hedgehog.

In Geography, as well looking at the United Kingdom, continents, oceans and where in the world it is hot and cold, we look at the two locations of Farnborough and Kasese in Uganda.

We learn a wide range of skills through art and D.T including printing, making a class stained glass style window, felt making and making 2D houses out of clay.   It can sometimes be messy but lots of fun!

P.E, dance and games

Outdoor Games, such as football, tag rugby and athletics is on a Thursday (children come into school wearing their P.E Kit) and is taught by CM Sports

Indoor P.E is on a Tuesday (children bring their P.E kit to school and change before their session).  This included gymnastics and dance.

Times table recall

In Year 2 we focus on the recall of multiplication facts 2x, 5x and 10x.  In the summer term we focus on skip counting in 3’s.

We use NUMBOTs and timestables.co.uk to help support us with this and when we have a secure recall we move on to using TT rock stars.

Homework
Homework is set on Fridays and runs for the week, it includes spellings – (tested on a Thursday), grammar activities completed on Spag.com, times table activities and reading.

Reading

Every child reads 3 times a week with an adult.  This is either reading the e-Collins books through Little Wandall or once they have finished the Little Wandall programme they read through the levels of the school reading scheme.

The children also read a range of books that have been carefully selected to cover the Achieving age-related expectations in Year 2;

  • Reading
  • Fluency
  • Clarity
  • Accuracy
  • Coherence

Music

Through a weekly music lesson the children in Year 2 are given opportunities to practise and improve their musical skills of improvising, composing and performing.  Over the year they use a wide range of tuned and untuned instruments including their voices and body percussion.

In the summer term every child will be given the chance to learn to play the recorder.

Things that help us learn

We use a lot of practical equipment to help us to learn as well as group activities and talking partners and talking trios.  We enjoy learning through rhymes and songs and using video clips.
